Laredo operates under the council-manager form of government, with the policy-making and legislative authority vested with the City Council, consisting of the Mayor and eight Council Members.
As the 8th largest municipal police department in the State of Texas, the Laredo Police Department is dedicated to the principles of Community Oriented Policing and is in the process of becoming accredited by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The City of Laredo is seeking a committed, decisive leader as its Chief of Police who is service-oriented and passionate about directing the City’s law enforcement operations, and actively works to ensure the community’s trust and confidence in the integrity and effectiveness of the Police Department.
The position requires Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field. Master's degree in Law Enforcement, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field is desirable.
At least twelve (12) years of increasingly responsible professional work experience in law enforcement, including seven (7) years of senior command administrative, or supervisory responsibility, preferably in a department of comparable size and complexity within a municipality is required.
A valid Basic Peace Officer and Advanced Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) must be obtained within eighteen (18) months of employment and maintained throughout the course of employment with the City.
The Chief of Police need not be a resident of Laredo or Texas at the time of appointment but must reside within the City limits throughout their tenure. Additionally, the final selected candidate must possess a valid State of Texas Driver License or if they hold an out-of-state license, must be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
