Lead staff and provide administrative and functional oversight of shift operations, coordinate and/or perform implementation of services, routine patrols, emergency response, service operations, dispatch activities, and security for special events in support of University protective services. Serve as liaison with internal and external community and University governance organizations related to crime prevention, safety, training, orientation, and evaluation of employees. Provide leadership in problem resolution; investigating criminal activity and monitoring progress; connecting and aligning UVM Police and its mission with the larger community. Interpret department and University policy; develop and implement training programs and provide individual and group instruction on law enforcement issues, personal safety, and crime prevention. Develop, build and maintain collaborative, problem-solving strategies and initiatives to create a climate of mutual respect and maintain a safe, secure environment for curricular and co-curricular learning educators. Promote positive relationships with the campus community. Actively engage in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion, environmental sustainability and delivering great customer experience. Reports to the Deputy Chief.
Associate’s degree in related field, three to six years’ specialized experience required. Certification by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council within probationary period required. Physical examination, written examination, psychological evaluation, and background investigation required pursuant to Rule 32 of Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council. Specific physical requirements apply based on job functions. Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain and driver’s check required.
Ability to communicate effectively with people; physically restrain a suspect; run up/down several flights of stairs and up to 100 yards; stand for long periods of time; walk for several hours while on patrol; drive emergency response vehicle. Ability to hear radio and telephone communications at both high and low decibels. Radio and telephone communications require clear diction without impediments. Good vision needed.
Familiarity with University policing, demonstrated skills in leadership, building trust and collaboration in multicultural communities and working with non-police service professionals.
