Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. The recruitment salary for this level is $54,350
Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with two or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and have at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $55,713
Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with four or more years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $57,400
Minimum of High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency’s designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Note: Lateral hires who are already certified NC law enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head. Out-of-State lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.
Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test. In addition, the UNC Police department requires a polygraph examination; possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License; pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver’s history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical. Must successfully complete a three-week department orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state mandated probationary period. The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner. The candidate(s) for this position will be considered an ‘ESSENTIAL’ Emergency Duty Employee. This means that the position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close. As such the employee in this position will be required to report to work according to their usual schedule, or upon notification to report outside of their usual work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies & Experience
Department prefers candidates who possess an Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited community college or university.
