On January 15, 2020, James “Jim” D. Brown retired from CALEA after faithfully serving the organization for 24 years. During his tenure, Jim served in the positions of associate director and conference planner.
He led many aspects of the accreditation programming offered by the organization and was instrumental in the development of new standards manuals for law enforcement, training academies and communications agencies. As the logistical manager of conferences, he ensured CALEA always had professional venues to hold its meetings and he focused on promoting the professional image of the organization in this role. Additionally, Jim strived to control the financial impacts of conference-related activities, thereby allowing the organization to recognize first-class events at a reasonable expense.
Jim’s passion for the profession of public safety was developed in his former career as a police officer and later the Chief of Police for the City of Streetsboro, Ohio. He consistently used his experiences from these positions to promote the benefits of accreditation and help lead organizations in the proper use of the tool as a process for continuous organizational improvement. Jim will forever be remembered as key contributor to the success of CALEA and for his willingness to accept any project for the betterment of public safety service providers and their communities.
Please join the CALEA Commissioners, Delegates and staff, as we extend our appreciation to Jim for his many years of support and for his unrelenting desire to make CALEA the Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies. We all wish Jim and his wife Lois well in their retirement.
