Dennis M. Hyater
Dennis joined the CALEA staff in 1992 after serving 28 years with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C. He was one of the first police officers selected to serve in the D.C. Management Intern Program where he worked in the office of U.S. Congressman Walter Fontleroy. Dennis was the recipient of the Superior Sustain Work Award for developing the Sector Concept, which is still used by the Metropolitan Police Department.
After his promotion to lieutenant in 1982, he was assigned to the Office of Assistant Chief of Police where he developed the Department of Protective Services for the District of Columbia. Dennis went on to serve as the commanding officer of the burglary, arson and pawn section and eventually became acting branch commander of the fugitive squad, check section, and burglary, arson and pawn sections. He later commanded the first cold case homicide unit, which during his tenure successful closed most of the cases they were assigned.
Besides his duties as a CALEA Program Manager, Dennis has acted as training coordinator, assessor trainer, assessor refresher trainer, accreditation manager trainer, and staff liaison to SRIC since joining CALEA. He currently serves as staff liaison to the Commission Awards Committee and to Review Committee C.
