APPLYING TO BECOME A CALEA ASSESSOR

CALEA seeks to maintain a pool of assessors that represents the demographics of the agencies it serves. CALEA Assessors must have:

•     A minimum of a baccalaureate degree or equivalent work experience and education.

•     Five years of current full-time public safety experience:

1.   as a first-line supervisor or higher, or

2.   with a high-level administrative experience that requires considerable use of discretion.

OR

Five years of CALEA accreditation experience.

•     The ability to write a high quality professional repo

Potential assessors need the written endorsement of their CEO to be considered. Your resume is your application and should be sent to Craig Hartley, Deputy Director/Chief of Staff.

CALEA selects persons who have the appropriate, educational, and professional accomplishments that match CALEA’s demographic needs for assessor training. Also considered is the number of assessors from the applicant’s agency. Once selected, applicants are notified in writing.

The primary factors for selecting assessors focus on their demonstrated professional and managerial abilities to evaluate public safety management policies, procedures, practices, and activities. It is important for assessors to have a firm understanding of modern public safety personnel, administrative, legal, and operational concepts and be able to interact, at a peer level, with the assessed agency CEO and command staff.

Persons chosen for new assessor training must register and attend the assigned CALEA Conference at their own or agency expense, take the new assessor training class, and pass the written exam given at the end of the class to become a certified CALEA Assessor. Knowledge of the accreditation process is one of the requirements for successful completion of assessor training and passing the exam. CALEA recommends that assessor applicants take, or have taken recently, “Introduction to Accreditation” and “Accreditation Manager Training” at a CALEA Conference before taking assessor training.
