CALEA Annual Report

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. was founded as a private, nonprofit, tax-exempt (501[c]3) corporation. Each year the CALEA Staff, under the direction the Executive Director, generates a Corporate Annual Report for the Commission. The report includes the annual financial audit by an independent auditor, as well as a yearly summary of the significant events and activities undertaken by CALEA in its operations.

04/28/2016 2015 Annual Report

2015 was a year that brought many new initiatives with more still in the exploration and planning stages.  Most of these initiatives will strengthen the organization, increase efficiency and bring greater value to client agencies, and further extend CALEA’s role in public safety professionalism.  Our Executive Director and his staff have created momentum that has unleashed creativity and identified new partnerships and opportunities for CALEA that will not only benefit current clients, but open the door for new clients as well.

We began 2015 with extraordinary fiscal health, the highest level of agency participation, and introducing several enhancements to the accreditation process that will hold down the costs while providing even better assessment capabilities.  Many of these new initiatives and ideas are generated by our client agencies, who take the time to provide feedback on what works and what can work better.

The history of an organization has a profound impact on its culture, and CALEA has been fortunate to have had countless leaders within the Commission that have consistently contributed to the ongoing advancement of the organization.  In fact, the growth of CALEA over the past 33 years has occurred over many different eras under different leadership with various priorities. 2011 was a notable year for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®) with many of the new process and program initiatives from 2010 being fully implemented.  The actions taken under the direction of the CALEA Board of Commissioners reflect both an understanding of the need to keep pace with technological advances and lead the public safety profession, as we all learn how to manage through budget shortfalls and/or staff reductions that impact the ability to engage in the CALEA accreditation process.  CALEA activities in 2011 demonstrated an uncompromising commitment to remain the leader in standards development and accreditation services, further asserting itself as the best resource for public safety agencies seeking continuous improvement.

CALEA marked the start of a new decade in 2010 with a number of new initiatives. Not only did CALEA move to a new office loca­tion, it embarked upon a bold and progressive strategic planning process which focused on creating greater return on investment for agencies involved in CALEA Accredita­tion. The strategic planning process also recognized the need to reinvent the concept of accreditation to ensure its relevance for contemporary public safety agencies. 2008 ended with a global recession affecting all segments of the economy and directly impacting local, state and provincial public safety departments’ budgets and operations. Public safety agencies were increasingly required to operate with reduced budgets, often requiring drastic measures including hiring freezes, overtime cutbacks, reduced acquisition of new technologies, and reduc­tion/discontinuance of various types of pro­fessional training.
