CALEA Recognition Program: Eligibility
Law enforcement agencies eligible to participate in the accreditation process are: (1) legally constituted governmental entities with a mandated responsibility to enforce laws and whose personnel have general or special law enforcement powers; or (2) other law enforcement entities, such as private agencies with mandated police powers, whose eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis by CALEA.
(1) Examples of eligible agencies include, but are not limited to:
- State/provincial police
- State/provincial highway patrol
- State/provincial law enforcement departments
- County/parish law enforcement
- Sheriff’s departments and offices
- Municipal law enforcement
- Federal law enforcement
- Specialized law enforcement (e.g., university, transit, port authority, park, fish and game, housing)
