The Fall 2010 CALEA Conference in Garden Grove, California, turned out to be an enormously popular event! Our conference hosts, the Garden Grove Police Department, did an exceptional job of making sure everyone had a productive and enjoyable conference. A special thank-you goes to Garden Grove Chief Joseph M. Polisar for all his support, and to the Cal State University, Los Angeles Police Department, the Cal State University, Fullerton Police Department, and the Tustin (CA) Police Department for their assistance in hosting the conference.
Because the Garden Grove (CA) Police Department is CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited, the public safety buildings and citizens of Garden Grove are safer. Specifically, it is because we are in compliance with standard 81.3.2, Alternate Source of Electrical Power. The standard requires all size agencies to have an alternative source of electrical power that is sufficient to ensure continued operation of emergency communication equipment.
Clearly, one of the most significant and immediately identified benefits of being an accredited agency was the complete review and rewriting of our General Orders manual. Policies and procedures were updated to meet the standards established by CALEA. In speaking with accreditation managers from other agencies, especially those preparing for their first accreditation, this is always mentioned as one of the most significant benefits.
