Accreditation Works

Case Number 67

The Lincoln (NE) Police Department is a D size agency with over 300 sworn personnel and just over 100 civilians. It has been Law Enforcement Accredited since April 1989. After years of maintaining our accredited status, we have institutionalized the CALEA Process in our daily activities. Department members understand the accreditation process and feel this is the best way to conduct our law enforcement responsibilities in Lincoln. Our policies, particularly those dealing with personnel issues, as required by the CALEA Standards, have contributed to the professionalism embodied in the daily work of the agency.

The Lincoln Police Department operates with four different union contracts, with nearly all employees represented by a union. There has been only one grievance filed in the past three years. This speaks volumes about the excellent working conditions and open communications between the department and the unions. Having concise and informative written directives makes it easy for the employees to find and read them.

The Lincoln Police Union is the bargaining agent for all officers below the rank of captain. In support of the department’s most recent reaccreditation, the attorney for the Lincoln Police Union wrote “…I have participated in disciplinary matters representing officers up to the rank of captain. While I don’t always agree with the outcome of the disciplinary case, I am impressed with the policies and procedures of the department as they pertain to disciplinary matters. Working with unions throughout the State of Nebraska, I have had the opportunity to review a number of policies. The policies and practices of the Lincoln Police Department, by far, exceed other departments’ policies as they relate to due process for officers”.

Being CALEA Accredited ensures that personnel at the Lincoln Police Department operate under written directives that meet a higher level of standards.
