Commissioner Kamatchus Becomes NSA President
CALEA Commissioner Ted G. Kamatchus, Sheriff of Marshall County, Iowa, was sworn in as the President of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) at its annual conference in Orlando, Florida, in June 2006.
Sheriff Kamatchus began his law enforcement career in 1976 in rural Minnesota, working in various small communities while attending Mankato State University and majoring in police science. In 1988, he was appointed Sheriff of Marshall County, Iowa, and has been successfully re-elected to that post since then.
Early in his career, Sheriff Kamatchus recognized the importance of “getting involved.” He has been active at the state and national level in a variety of organizations and committees involving reserve law enforcement officers, training academies, and law enforcement associations. He served as President of the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association in 2000, and held the position of NSA 1st Vice-President prior to assuming the presidency.
Also of note, for a period of three months (July – October 2006), a “first” in CALEA Board history occurred: current or former commissioners simultaneously were serving as president of three of the four CALEA founding law enforcement organizations. Ted was joined by former CALEA Commissioner Jimmie L. Dotson, who was installed as President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) in July 2006, and they joined Commissioner Mary Ann Viverette, who concludes her year-long Presidency of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in October 2006.
