Fee Reduction Announced for Multiple Accreditations

Sylvester Daughtry, Jr., Executive Director

At the Summer CALEA Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, the Commission addressed the issue of reducing initial accreditation fees for those CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited agencies seeking Communications and/or Training Academy Accreditation.

I am pleased to announce that effective immediately, a reduced fee schedule was approved by the Commission. Law Enforcement Accredited agencies that wish to enter their components into either the Public Safety Communications and/or the Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation Programs are eligible for a one time 40% reduction in the current initial administrative fees for each program.

This latest action taken by the Commission follows a substantial list of new initiatives and activities instituted over the past several years to enhance and expand services to CALEA clients. As an answer to that proverbial question “What have you done for me lately?” I offer the following:

  • Introduced the CALEA Recognition Program, designed for smaller agencies, and the Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation Program.
  • Launched a number of special awards programs (Flagship Agency, Meritorious Agency, Bittner and Cotter Awards, TRI-ARC Excellence, and Assessor Certificates of Appreciation) to recognize outstanding agencies, Chief Executive Officers, and CALEA Assessors.
  • Developed the CALEA Agency Support Fund (CASF) to provide grants to qualified, smaller agencies seeking initial accreditation.
  • The Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, 5th Edition and the Recognition Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, 2nd Edition were published. A revision to the Standards for Public Safety Communications Agencies, along with a new publication entitled CALEA Process and Programs Guide, is in the works.
  • A new DVD, CALEA: In Pursuit of Excellence, was recently released presenting an overview of the Law Enforcement Accreditation Process, with a comparable version for the Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program coming soon.
  • Two new software programs were developed to streamline the administrative management aspects of the accreditation process: the CALEA Accreditation Compliance Express (CACE) Program for agencies and the Electronic Assessment Reporting System (EARS) Program for CALEA Assessors.
  • And finally, in conjunction with this opening announcement, the on-site administrative fee was reduced in 2001, and, more importantly, CALEA’s fee schedules have not increased since 1993, an aspect not found with many other budget items!

CALEA is proud of these programs and accomplishments, and expresses its thanks to all our member agencies and their employees for their efforts and continued support.
