Your Commissioner-Ted G. Kamatchus Sheriff Ted Kamatchus began his law enforcement career in 1976 in rural Minnesota, working in various small communities while attending Mankato State University and majoring in police science. In 1980, he joined the Marshalltown, Iowa Police Department, where he served in various capacities including the patrol division, firearms instruction, hostage negotiations, and tactical squad. In 1988, he was appointed Sheriff of Marshall County, Iowa, and has been successfully re-elected to that post since then. Early in his career, Sheriff Kamatchus recognized the importance of “getting involved.” He has been active at the state and national level in a variety of organizations and committees involving reserve law enforcement officers, training academies, and law enforcement associations. He served as President of the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association in 2000, and currently holds the position of 1st Vice-President for the National Sheriffs’ Association and will become the association's President in 2006. Ted was also appointed to the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Science and Technology Committee (HSSTAC) in February 2004. His experience in the technology aspects of law enforcement stems from considerable involvement with various committees and organizations such as the Pegasus Research Foundation, the Law Enforcement Information Technology Standards Council (LEITSC), the Law Enforcement Executive Forum (LEEF), and the COPS Consortium Committee. Ted was appointed to the Commission Board beginning January 1, 2002, and currently serves on the Corporate Affairs Committee, the Awards Committee, and as Review Committee “B” Chair. He also participated as a member of the SRIC Focus Group. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has been CALEA Accredited since November 1999.
