CALEA Team Leader Gets a ‘Pat on the Back’

Wilmington, Delaware, resident and teacher, Marla Garris, was participating in the Citizen’s Police Academy offered by the Wilmington Police Department last April. One of the classes coincided with that agency’s third reaccreditation on-site assessment. After the on-site team leader, Assistant Chief Scott A. Cunningham of the Tampa (FL) Police Department addressed the class to explain the accreditation process, Garris asked Wilmington’s Accreditation Manager, Master Sergeant Allison Saunders, if she might speak with the team leader and ask for his assistance.

Ms. Garris explained that, despite attempts to locate him, neither she nor her 74-year-old mother had seen or heard from her brother in over 15 years, and were not sure if he was still living. He was last known to have lived in the Tampa area. Could the team leader help find her brother? Based on her impression of Cunningham, Master Sergeant Saunders thought he might be willing to help.

A few weeks later, Saunders learned that Ms. Garris’ brother had been located. Shortly before Mother’s Day, Detective Greg Stout, who Assistant Chief Cunningham had asked to assist, called Ms. Garris’ mother, and not only let her know the location of her only son, but also where to contact a grandson. It meant for a very special Mother’s Day.

Marla Garris commends Assistant Chief Cunningham’s “outstanding commitment to Law Enforcement and is grateful for his follow through on his promise to help.” She says he will get a card every Mother’s Day from now on.

Assistant Chief Cunningham’s actions definitely fall into the “above and beyond” category for assessor duties, but his extra effort is no surprise to anyone at CALEA. We just think he did a good deed, and deserves a pat on the back.
