Your Commissioner-Ron Ace

Ron Ace’s career as a law enforcement professional began more than 30 years ago. Ron is a native of New York City, and prior to beginning his career in law enforcement, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 through 1971. He served a tour of duty in Viet Nam in 1969, attached to a Huey Gunship helicopter squadron as a door-gunner. He has been with the Concord (CA) Police Department since 1975, having previously served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Alameda County (CA) Sheriff’s Office.

During the past 30 years with Concord, Chief Ace has held a variety of positions. In 1985, he was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant, and had successive assignments as a Patrol Sergeant, Juvenile Bureau Supervisor, and Internal Affairs Sergeant. In 1995, he was promoted to Lieutenant, serving as the Southern District Community Policing Commander, opening and overseeing the City’s first district field office. He also served as SWAT Team Commander. In 1998, Chief Ace was promoted to Captain and placed in command of the Field Operations Division, with 115 officers and 30 civilians under his leadership, including Uniform Patrol, Traffic, Special Enforcement, Jail Operations, and the three District Commands.

In October 1999, Ron was appointed to the position of Chief. He has been instrumental in the development and evolution of Concord’s generalist model of community policing. As a result of the police department’s success, the City of Concord has integrated the philosophy of community policing throughout the city, resulting in a true Community Oriented Government model. This model has been showcased throughout the nation, including the CALEA Conference in Pasadena.

Chief Ace received his bachelor’s degree in Public Management from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California, and holds special certifications from California POST Management, the Supervisory Leadership Institute, and the Senior Management Institute for Police.

Chief Ace is currently a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the California Police Chiefs Association, the Contra Costa County Police Chiefs Association, and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). In October 2001, he was appointed to a three-year term as a CALEA Commissioner, effective January 1, 2002. Ron currently holds the position of Vice President of the Commission.

Ron, his wife, Carol, and daughter, Sue, have made Concord their home for more than 25 years. He has been active in the community in school activities, youth sports, and public service agencies. Ron plans to retire from the Concord Police Department in July 2005.
