ACCREDITATION WORKS

Case Number 47

The Aberdeen Proving Ground Police Academy in Maryland, which operates under the CALEA Certified Aberdeen Proving Ground Police, has received an academic award that offers college credits to academy graduates. The Academy was granted this designation based on an academic assessment of its entry-level training program. Successful completion of the program is worth 60 semester hours toward the 120 hours needed for a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from Bellevue University. Headquartered in Bellevue, Nebraska, the university offers online course work toward undergraduate and graduate degrees. This means that civilian law enforcement officers will receive college credit and active-duty military police officers will receive promotion points, as well.

The academic review was directly facilitated by the Aberdeen Proving Ground Police’s affiliation with CALEA, and the Academy’s law enforcement and training academy accreditation standards-based curriculum.  The number of academic credit hours was awarded based on curriculum training models. The university is also examining the advanced and specialized training curriculum that the Academy conducts for an additional credit review. An increase in training time and curriculum could result in the addition of even more credits.

The Aberdeen Proving Ground Police is currently in self-assessment in both the CALEA Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation program, and the Law Enforcement Accreditation program.
