Your Commissioner-Eduardo Gonzalez

Eduardo (Eddie) Gonzalez was born in Tampa, Florida and moved to Miami after graduation from high school. He joined the Air Force in 1960 and served as an air policeman. Eddie had thoughts of becoming a police officer, and while working as a clerk in a liquor store, the experience of being the victim of a store robbery and shooting at the robbers, convinced him to join the Miami-Dade Police Department in 1965.

He rose steadily through the ranks and in 1986, was appointed Deputy Director, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure with Miami-Dade, Eddie was involved in the design and implementation of numerous law enforcement programs, including Community Oriented Policing (COP) and the Violence Reduction Program. Additionally, he was the point person for an affirmative action program that had as its main emphasis the creation of an agency work force that mirrored the community it served.

In 1992, he was appointed Chief of Police in Tampa, Florida. His tenure was cut short in 1993 when President Bill Clinton appointed him as Director of the United States Marshals Service.

Following the Oklahoma City bombing, the Marshals Service was given the responsibility of preparing a government-wide plan for securing federal buildings. This plan later became the blueprint for enhancing security at all existing and new federal buildings. Under his leadership, the Marshals Service became the first federal law enforcement agency to become CALEA Accredited. He retired as Director of the United States Marshals Service in 1999.

Eddie has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University and is a graduate of the FBI’s National Executive Institute, the FBI National Academy, and the Senior Management Institute for Police. He is affiliated with numerous professional groups, and in its October 2002 issue, Hispanic Business Magazine selected him as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the United States.

Mr. Gonzalez was appointed a CALEA Commissioner in 2002 and currently serves on the SRIC and Review Committee E. He also chairs the 25th Anniversary Committee.

Eddie and his wife Marina have three daughters and three grandchildren. The Gonzalez’s favorite past time is traveling, particularly on cruise ships.
