SRIC Focus Group Deliberations Continue

The 2003-2004 Standards Review and Interpretation Committee Focus Group, created at the July 2003 CALEA Conference in Detroit, Michigan, held its second general meeting in Pasadena, California, before the start of the March CALEA Conference. The Focus Group’s purpose, as part of a periodic five-year review, is two-fold: to undertake a review of all existing law enforcement standards in terms of clarity and current relevance; and to review the accreditation process and improve upon it wherever necessary.

The Focus Group is co-chaired by Commissioner Mary Ann Viverette, Chief of Police, Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Past Commissioner Bill Miller, Chief of Police, Elgin, Illinois, with Program Manager Karen Shepard in charge of staff support. At its initial organizational meeting, the Focus Group was divided into 4 sub-committees, each with a designated chairperson and assigned to review a specific group of standards in the Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, 4th Edition. The Focus Group is divided into four major committees for standards review: Administration, Personnel, Operations, and Support.

Suggestions and comments concerning standards and process should be referred to the appropriate committee chair. Contact information is available on the CALEA website, www.calea.org, under News and Events, SRIC Focus Group Press Release.

The Focus Group is next scheduled to meet prior to the start of the July 2004 CALEA Conference in Buffalo, New York. There is no firm date for the Focus Group to report its recommendations to the SRIC Committee.
