First Mexican Agency Recognized
On March 20, 2004, the Seguridad Publica Municipal Ayuntamiento de Chihuahua (Municipal Police of Chihuahua) became the first Mexican law enforcement agency to receive an award from CALEA. This further adds to the international flavor of the Commission, now with accredited or recognized agencies in four countries: the United States, Canada, Barbados, and Mexico.
Seguridad Publica Municipal Ayuntamiento de Chihuahua was awarded CALEA Recognition at the Conference in Pasadena, following a successful on-site assessment which was conducted in Spanish, another first for the Commission. Attending the Celebration Banquet on Saturday evening was a very proud team from Chihuahua that included the Counsel General of Mexico, Ruben Beltran; Chihuahua Governor, C.P. Patricio Martinez Garcia; Chihuahua Mayor, LIC. Alejandro Cano Ricaud; Director of the Chihuahua Police, LIC. Raul Grajeda Dominquez; and Recognition Manager, LIC. Javier Costas.
This 800-member agency functions as a city police department, except it does not, under Mexican law, conduct criminal investigations or enforce traffic laws. Chihuahua City is the capital of the State of Chihuahua, and is located in northern Mexico, approximately 250 miles southwest of El Paso, Texas.
Director Grajeda Dominguez hopes to continue to raise the bar of professionalism for his department and reach his goal of attaining CALEA Accreditation for his agency.
