Message from the Chair

The Commission is preparing to launch the Standards Review Task Force, whose mission is to review and make appropriate revisions to accreditation programs’ standards (law enforcement, public safety communications, and public safety training academy) and related CALEA processes.  Periodic review of the standards and CALEA practices by practicing professionals is one of the foundations that make your accreditation programs the benchmark for law enforcement and public safety professionalism.

Revisions or additions will reflect a consensus of ideas and suggestions from all of you.  CALEA is taking care to involve a comprehensive mix of client agency and PAC representatives, CALEA assessors, Alliance partners, Commissioners, and staff in this effort.  CALEA's continued success is attributed to the open forum that exists among all member agencies.  The flow of information has proven vital in sustaining the quality service provided by CALEA; and, in turn, further enhances the level of public safety available to our communities.

As always, there will be an opportunity to review the work of the Task Force before any changes are considered.  CALEA will post the names of Task Force members on the CALEA website so you can contact them, or CALEA staff, with your ideas.

It is my hope that the Task Force can make its recommendations to the full Commission by November 2004.  If there are changes, you can be assured that there will be a reasonable time frame for implementation; and, if necessary, the opportunity for CALEA staff presentations to explain changes.

Jim O’Dell
