The Inspection Services branch of Alberta Transportation has received a 2003 Premier’s Award of Excellence for their Inspection Services Law Enforcement Accreditation project. Team members receiving the award are: Steve Callahan, Executive Director; Jacquie Daumont, Accreditation Manager; Kathy Golem, Accreditation Assistant; Dan Derzaph, District Supervisor; Tom Nyuli, Regional Manager; Jim Sawitsky, Regional Manager; Gord Ellert, Regional Manager; Russ Fikowski, Regional Manager; and Dave Les Strange, Operations Manager.
Inspection Services, located in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, achieved initial accreditation in November 2001 by becoming the first Canadian non-police enforcement organization to achieve accreditation from CALEA. Their mandate was “to create a more effective and efficient organization by becoming an accredited law enforcement agency, thereby supporting the department’s goals of improved transportation safety and creating a value-added organization.”
The Premier’s Award of Excellence, in its ninth year, is an honor unique to Alberta. The recipients “exemplify the values expressed in the government’s business and financial plans, the Alberta public service vision, and quality management principles.” From the 45 submissions from departments, agencies, boards, and commissions throughout Alberta for the 2003 awards, 29 teams received the Award. Each submission was reviewed based on the following criteria: leadership and people focus, client and stakeholder focus, and process management.
Recommendations were made to Premier Ralph Klein, who made the final selection.
Executive Director Steve Callahan reports “the process to gain accreditation from CALEA was a very time consuming and detailed endeavor, but receiving accreditation was well worth the effort. Law enforcement accreditation is a sound investment for the agency and its clients.” Some of the dividends of accreditation include enhanced public trust, support and confidence in the department, internal and external accountability, increased efficiency and more effective performance.
He goes on to say, “staff has always worked hard to improve safety, but obtaining accreditation has reinforced and strengthened the procedures and processes of Inspection Services and has positively impacted the reputation of the organization and its staff. Much of the credit for these accomplishments is due to the enthusiasm and commitment of the dedicated Inspection Services staff assigned to the accreditation initiative and to all staff within the branch.”
Congratulations to Alberta Transportation, Inspections Services on achieving this prestigious award.
