Accreditation WorksCase Number 41
The legislation contains 70 Standards to which all policing agencies in the province must adhere. Policing agencies and municipalities primarily use the guidelines introduced in this legislation as tools to assist with their understanding and implementation of the Ontario Police Services Act and its Regulations. Although these guidelines may be somewhat dissimilar to the CALEA Standards, the contents, as well as the spirit behind them, are based upon best practices for policing.
Prior to the implementation of the legislation, the Service was already in compliance with 85% of the guidelines in the Adequacy and Effectiveness of Police Services Regulation. The work completed through the CALEA process identified this Service as a leader in the adequacy process. Largely due to our CALEA involvement and commitment to the process, the Niagara Regional Police Service achieved the province’s highest professional rating for an agency.
Since January 1, 2001, this Service has been subject to three reviews by Ministry Staff relating to its compliance with the Adequacy and Effectiveness of Police Services Regulation. During each of these reviews, this Service has been recognized as a leader in policy development, training, and procedures related to provincially mandated requirements. By striving to meet the CALEA Standards, this Service has moved forward to become a leader in compliance with our mandated legislation.
Chief Gary E. Nicholls and his executive team value both accreditation processes as the Niagara Regional Police Service aspires to achieve the highest level of excellence in policing.
