Top Assessor-Richard A. Mattice


The “Top Assessor” designation recognizes CALEA’s best assessment Team Leaders who have received 100% on their latest assessor certification test.  Top Assessors review all proposed new questions for the assessor test and share their experience with the CALEA staff on other aspects of assessor training and on-site assessments.

Scoring a 100% on the assessor refresher test in Jacksonville, veteran assessor Richard Mattice has earned the “Top Assessor” distinction.  Richard has been Chief of Police for the City of Kentwood (MI) since 1991.  His CALEA accredited department of 70 officers and 25 civilian employees serves a suburban community of 45,000 in western Michigan.  Previously Chief Mattice served 22 years with the Grand Rapids (MI) Police Department, retiring with the rank of captain.  He holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Grand Valley State University.  Chief Mattice is a graduate of the 123rd session of the FBI National Academy, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar, and PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police.  His is a veteran of the United States Army, serving one year in the Republic of Vietnam.  Chief Mattice is married with two adult children.  He has been an assessor and a team leader for Calea for over 15 years.
