O’Dell
Chosen to Lead CALEA
With the resignation of Commission President Stephen Monier,
CALEA Commissioners selected a new Executive Board for the balance of 2002 at
the March Conference in Jacksonville (FL). Monier
was elected Commission President in November 2001.
The new
Executive Board is made up of: Commission
Chair/President James M. O’Dell, Chief of Police, Kettering (OH);
Commission Vice President James T. Moore, Commissioner,
Florida Department of Law Enforcement; Commission Secretary Eduardo Gonzalez, Retired Director of the U.S. Marshals
Service; Commission Treasurer
Patrick Oliver, Chief of Police, Fairborn (OH); and Immediate
Past Commission Chair William
D. Miller, Chief of Police, Elgin (IL).
Chief O’Dell says, “I look
forward to continuing my service to the Commission as President.
My belief in the accreditation process and the talented staff behind it
affords me the opportunity to humbly, yet confidently, lead such a dynamic
organization. CALEA’s goal of
facilitating quality law enforcement remains true.
In the spirit of CALEA, methods of implementation will continue to
improve and change. I’d say
we’re here to stay and our work proves to be effective over and over again.”
“It
is an honor to work with such a talented group of individuals and most humbling
to be elected Chair. Steve
Monier’s unequaled contributions to the improvement of law enforcement leave
me with tough shoes to fill. I’ll
need these shoes to continue down the path of excellence he’s cleared and to
actively promote and cultivate CALEA. I
am both energized and inspired to by the high bar Steve has set, and I look
forward to continuing his journey. Police
Chief, Leader, Author, Professor, U.S. Marshal — I can’t imagine what
he’ll do next.”
President George Bush chose Monier
to be the U.S. Marshal for the district of New Hampshire and as a presidential
appointee, he cannot serve on any outside boards and commissions. A successful author, and retired Chief of
Police of Goffstown (NH), Steve Monier served CALEA since January of 1995. His contributions include serving as Chair and Vice Chair of the
Commission, leading the State Accreditation Task Force that developed the
Recognition and Alliance programs, and serving as the Chair of the Outreach
Committee.
Also departing CALEA after ten years of service was Jack
Bishop, who has been elected six times as a County Supervisor of Polk County
(IA). Jack is known for his keen
business sense and oversees a budget of 200 million dollars. Jack is also a veteran of the US Coast Guard. Jack’s most recent service has been with Review Committee “A” and
the Corporate Affairs Committee.
