Working with You
Maya Mitchell--Program Assistant
If you attended the CALEA
Las Vegas (NV), Burlington (VT), or Greensboro (NC) Conferences and had occasion
to stop at the wearable table, then you have had the opportunity to meet
CALEA’s newest staff member, Maya Mitchell. Maya is a Program Assistant who works closely with Program
Managers, Dennis Hyater and Steve Mitchell on on-sites. Our assessor database is maintained by Maya, and she is the person to
contact regarding inquires of assessor status, and assessor training, updates,
and requirements.
Maya was born in
Greensboro, NC where she spent her childhood and adolescent years. She moved to Charlotte to attend the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte, and in 1997, she received dual degrees in English and Communications
Mass Media. While in college she worked as an intern with two local news
stations, and upon graduation was offered a position as a studio operator at
WSOC-9 Eyewitness News, where she worked for two years. Her next job was with PNC Bank as a collector, and after eight months,
the job relocated to Maryland so she went to work for Cigna Healthcare in
Customer Service. In March of 2000,
she found her new home at CALEA as a Program Assistant. She is very interested in the many aspects of communications, mainly Mass
Media, and Public Relations. Eventually
she would like to concentrate on one of the two fields.
Maya feels accreditation is important for all law
enforcement agencies as it enables an agency to evaluate their operations and
improve the weak areas. It is
better for agencies to go through the process, which ensures a more organized
and professional department, than to risk public criticism on how the
organization operates.
Maya, and her husband
Tracy live in Manassas, VA. They
have a two-year old son, Nasir. She
enjoys singing, reading, and writing poetry. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son.
