Working with You John (Johnnie) Elder, Office Assistant The man behind the scenes working in the CALEA mailroom is retired Postal Inspector, John (Johnnie) Elder. Along with the everyday mail and inventory responsibilities, his special challenge includes preparing and organizing the many cartons of material and merchandise for shipment to each conference, and putting things back in order upon their return. Johnnie, a native of central Georgia, started his law enforcement career as a Postal Inspector in January 1969. After an extensive period of training (classroom and field), he assumed responsibilities at his first duty station, Lancaster, PA. In 1979, he was transferred to Washington, DC, and moved to Northern Virginia where he and his wife have resided ever since. While in Washington, Johnnie served as the field liaison with several government agencies including The White House, the House of Representatives, and the United States Senate. Other duty stations included Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. When he retired from the Postal Inspection Service as a Projects Coordinator/Team Leader in 1993, he fulfilled his ambition of returning to school and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northern Virginia Community College. After being retired for a time, he came to work for CALEA in February 1999. Law enforcement seems to run in the Elder family. An older brother retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). A nephew began his law enforcement career as an officer with the St. Louis County (MO) Police Department. That nephew, following his father’s example, is now a special agent with ATF. Another nephew is presently an officer with the Macon (GA) Police Department. Both of those local departments are accredited agencies. Johnnie feels, “Accreditation has a positive impact on the community as it means that an organization has willingly submitted itself to a microscopic examination to determine if it is meeting specific standards of the highest degree of professionalism.” Johnnie is married with one child and one grandchild. He and his wife are active in their local church. They both sing in the sanctuary choir and he teaches one of the Sunday school classes for senior high students. Additionally, from time to time he volunteers as a tutor at a local elementary school. He enjoys genealogy and reading, and has been able to trace some of his ancestors back to the late 1700’s. He found one ancestral grandfather who served in the War of 1812, and has located original papers on file at the National Archives bearing his signature relative to his military service. He is particularly fond of mysteries and Civil War historical novels. |
