US Army Invades CALEA

As part of a program to verify performance and improve military law enforcement, the Provost Marshal Office of four major US Army installations have accepted the challenge to become CALEA accredited.  The functions of a Provost Marshal are similar to those of a city police chief.

The CALEA staff has been working with Army representatives since the spring of 2000 and members of various army units have been attending recent CALEA meetings. Currently in the self-assessment phase are military units representing the Provost Marshal Offices at Ft. Drum, NY; Ft. George W. Meade, MD; Ft. Bragg, NC; and Ft. Benning, GA.

CALEA’s Executive Director, Sylvester Daughtry, Jr. states, “I am impressed with the Army’s ‘can do’ attitude, their organizational ability, and their willingness to commit to a totally different experience to improve Army services.”

The initial units represent a test of standards applicability within military law enforcement.  A study will be done to determine if additional standards should be adopted or modified, or procedures adjusted for military units.  The accreditation program applies to base law enforcement activities and not the combat support or national security role of the military police.

Several officers and senior noncommissioned officers have passed assessor training with scores of 96%!  Pentagon officials told CALEA the army is proud of the up to date training provided to soldiers in the Military Police Corps and would like to have its members recognized for professional excellence both in the military and civilian law enforcement venue.
