John Cary Bittick was elected Sheriff of Monroe County, GA, in 1982 succeeding his father. With the exception of two terms, a member of the Bittick family has served as Sheriff of Monroe County since the early 1900’s! John began his law enforcement career a deputy sheriff in 1972 in the very department he would one day lead. Sheriff Bittick has a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mercer University and is a graduate of the 130th session of the FBI National Academy. In June of this year he will become the President of the National Sheriffs’ Association and is a past President of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association. John is a dedicated criminal justice professional who is involved in numerous community and law enforcement organizations. He has been a CALEA Commissioner since 1993 and is currently a member of CALEA’s Executive Board, serving as Secretary. He is also a member of the SRIC Committee and Review Committee C. Sheriff Bittick is finishing his third and final term as a CALEA Commissioner and will be leaving CALEA in December 2001. |
