Working with You

Reginald Newell
Research and Planning Coordinator

In February of 2000, Reginald Newell joined CALEA to assume a new position designed to coordinate research activities and help develop CALEA’s strategic plan for the 21st century.  Reggie, as Research and Planning Coordinator, reports directly to Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry, Jr. and serves as staff liaison to the Strategic Planning and the Standards Review and Interpretations Committees.

After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Buffalo, he moved to the Washington, DC area and began his career with International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) (afl-cio), in an entry-level position in the research department while working on a Master’s degree from American University.  Areas of study included economics, human resources, and industrial relations.

Reggie spent 30 years working for the IAMAW, the last 20 as Director of Research and was responsible for all research and planning activities for this major labor union. This included providing background and participating in major collective bargaining negotiations as well as preparing background papers and testimony on key legislative issues for presentation to various congressional committees.

After retiring in 1996, he began working for the Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA) as Manager of Labor and Other Member Segments representing employee assistance professionals in the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.  While there he designed the association’s first client needs assessment survey.

Reggie sees the value of obtaining professional status as witnessed in his two previous positions.  Certified skilled tradesmen would have their credentials recognized wherever they went, and to be a Certified Employee Assistance Professional was to have attained the height of professional certification.  He states, “Working at CALEA allows me to see the same stamp of professionalism applied to agencies in the critical field of law enforcement.”  He hopes to spend the rest of his working life at CALEA doing the type of work he likes best and for a cause he believes in.

Reggie enjoys shooting, tennis and bridge when not in the office and is also an avid movie fan.

We welcome Reggie and are sure we will benefit from the experience and notable credentials he brings to us.
