The year 2000 ushered in the 21st Century and
with it came continued progress in CALEA’s efforts to extend professional
credentialing to law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S., Canada and
beyond. The year also saw success in CALEA’s efforts to bring its
member agencies up-to-date concerning the ever-changing issues facing law
enforcement. more

the year 2000 closed there were three communications agencies accredited and
fifteen more agencies in self-assessment for the Public Safety Communications
Accreditation Program. more

Assessor Refresher test given at the Burlington, VT, meeting, a review of
on-site assessment critiques, and Program Manager evaluations, Chief John

Once
again with the November meeting comes the unhappy task of saying good-by to a
Commissioner. This time we are
doubly saddened as we bid farewell to Commissioner Henry DeGeneste (Senior VP
and Director of Corporate Security at Prudential Securities) and Commissioner
Keith Chadwell (Deputy County Manager, Fulton County, GA), both of whom became
Commissioners in 1992. more |
RACIAL
PROFILING UPDATE
At
the July 2000, meeting in Schaumburg, IL, CALEA staff recommended the approval
of a new, proposed Standard 1.2.9
Profiling. SRIC recognized this
as a major issue for law enforcement officials and felt that comment was needed
from the field before a final decision was made.

Recognition
Awarded
The
Vienna (VA) Police Department was the first agency to be “Recognized” under
CALEA’s new Recognition Program. Chief Daniel Boring said, “The
(recognition) program was a way for his officers and employee to demonstrate
they meet and exceed the requirements of a professional credentialing
program.” more

On January 1, 2001, two new
Commissioners began their 3 year terms. more
A new CALEA video
“Accreditation: Professional Excellence” is available.
The eight-minute VHS tape was produced by LETN and provides an overview
of the accreditation process. The video costs $25 plus shipping and can be
obtained by calling the CALEA office or through the CALEA
Online Store.

"Accreditation Works" presents
specific examples of how accreditation positively affects an agency or
community. These success stories often go unnoticed, so send your examples
to CALEA. more
Crime Analysis
Some of the accomplishments MACA has
achieved are conducting annual training conferences, drawing attendees from
across the nation and international borders; and setting up a web page,
(www.ableweb.com/maca).
This web page has become a resource for crime analysts, nationwide.

Cary Bittick was elected Sheriff of Monroe County, GA, in 1982 succeeding his
father. With the exception of two
terms, a member of the Bittick family has served as Sheriff of Monroe County
since the early 1900’s! more

Program (HOAP) Mt. Pleasant (SC) Police
Department
A local woman was well known to
the Mount Pleasant Police both for her colorful personality and over 30 arrests.
Patrol Sergeant Stan Davis began talking in earnest relative to doing
something about such repeat offenders and was later assigned by Chief Thomas J.
Sexton to do just that. more
