MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

The year 2000 ushered in the 21st Century and with it came continued progress in CALEA’s efforts to extend professional credentialing to law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S., Canada and beyond.  The year also saw success in CALEA’s efforts to bring its member agencies up-to-date concerning the ever-changing issues facing law enforcement. more

Working With State and Local Law Enforcement to Protect Our Nation’s Critical Infrastructures
Michael A. Vatis, Director, National Infrastructure Protection Center
How many computers are used in your jurisdiction? How many are connected to the Internet? How many can be used to commit crimes? How would you respond if a hacker accessed your critical water or power distribution and control systems? These are tough questions that demand answers. more

Although the weather outside was cold and rainy (not the snow event we expected in this New England winter wonderland area), it did not dampen the warm and festive feeling of our November Conference in Burlington, Vermont. more

Working With You
In February of 2000, Reginald Newell joined CALEA to assume a new position designed to coordinate research activities and help develop CALEA’s strategic plan for the 21st century.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

Once again with the November meeting comes the unhappy task of saying good-by to a Commissioner.  This time we are doubly saddened as we bid farewell to Commissioner Henry DeGeneste (Senior VP and Director of Corporate Security at Prudential Securities) and Commissioner Keith Chadwell (Deputy County Manager, Fulton County, GA), both of whom became Commissioners in 1992.  more

RACIAL PROFILING UPDATE
At the July 2000, meeting in Schaumburg, IL, CALEA staff recommended the approval of a new, proposed Standard 1.2.9 Profiling.  SRIC recognized this as a major issue for law enforcement officials and felt that comment was needed from the field before a final decision was made.  more

Recognition Awarded
The Vienna (VA) Police Department was the first agency to be “Recognized” under CALEA’s new Recognition Program. Chief Daniel Boring said, “The (recognition) program was a way for his officers and employee to demonstrate they meet and exceed the requirements of a professional credentialing program.” more

NEW COMMISSIONERS
On January 1, 2001, two new Commissioners began their 3 year terms. more

A new CALEA video “Accreditation: Professional Excellence” is available.  The eight-minute VHS tape was produced by LETN and provides an overview of the accreditation process. The video costs $25 plus shipping and can be obtained by calling the CALEA office or through the CALEA Online Store.

"Accreditation Works" presents specific examples of how accreditation positively affects an agency or community. These success stories often go unnoticed, so send your examples to CALEA.
