Europe Without Crossing the Atlantic – CALEA Montreal Meeting July 1999

Hospitality with a French flavor is on tap for CALEA’s July 1999 meeting to be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. "Joie de vivre" (Joy of Life) permeates the entire city, especially the downtown area and that is exactly where the conference hotel, the Queen Elizabeth, is located. Montreal's streets, theaters, and centers for the performing arts are alive with an endless stream of festivals and events. Within walking distance you can tour the "old city", the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Old Port Waterfront, the Montreal Underground, or just enjoy an incredible offering of restaurant's, outdoor cafes, historical sites, shops and boutiques. There is Formula One car racing, Expos baseball, or gambling at the Casino de Montreal. They have an extensive underground subway to get you just about anywhere you want to go.

Our host, the Montreal Urban Police Department, will help us explore their beautiful city. In addition, the Police Department Band will provide entertainment for a Thursday night social to be held at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel.

The weather will be that wonderful Canadian July summer, with average highs about 79 degrees and the evening cool of 59.

As visitors, our dollar stretches a long way in Canada. Presently the rate of exchange is 1.5. That means for every US dollar we spend we get $1.50's worth of Canadian goods, food, entertainment, hotel costs, etc. Canada also has a tax (GST) that we have to pay on taxable items at the time of purchase, but as nonresidents, we are eligible for a tax refund on accommodations and goods purchased in Canada. Keep your receipts and pick up a refund claim form at the CALEA registration desk. You can request this refund on departure or later by filing form GST176.

You will need proof of US citizenship. A passport is ideal, but birth certificate or naturalization papers and one picture ID will do. Anyone traveling with you will need the same kind of ID.

It is against the law to bring firearms or any other personal protection weapons into Canada.
