ACCREDITATION FOR LAW
NEWS RELEASE THE 2003 CALEA COMMISSION September 2002 The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) is pleased to announce the 2003 CALEA Commission. The composition of the new Commission reflects the loss of familiar faces and the addition of new ones.
CALEA was established as a private, non-profit accrediting authority in 1979 by the four major law enforcement membership associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The Executive Directors of these four associations appoint members to the Commission annually. The Commission has 21 members; 11 of whom are law enforcement practitioners, with the remaining 10 from the public and private sectors. Service on the Commission is voluntary, with Commissioners appointed to a term of three years. The Commission meets three times each year.
Currently serving on CALEA’s Executive Board are the following Commissioners: Commission Chairperson/President, James M. O’Dell, Chief of Police, Kettering, OH; Commission Vice President, James T. Moore, Commissioner, Florida Department of Law Enforcement; Commission Secretary, Eduardo Gonzalez, Retired Director of the U.S. Marshals Service; Commission Treasurer, Patrick Oliver, Chief of Police, Fairborn, OH, and Immediate Past Commission Chairperson, William D. Miller, Chief of Police, Elgin, IL.
Leaving the Commission on December 31, 2002 are William J. Buckner, City Manager (Ret.), Marietta, GA; Dorris S. Certain, Planning And Research Coordinator, Plano Police Department, Plano, TX; and, James F. Wright II, Deputy City Manager (Ret.), Hartford, CT.
Appointed to the Commission are four new Commissioners: Councilwoman Peggy Bilsten, City of Phoenix, AZ; Robert R. Greenlaw, Director, Northeast Bergen Central Dispatch, Ridgewood, NJ; Jimmie L. Dotson, Chief of Police, Chattanooga, TN; and, Charles P. Austin, Sr., 1st Assistant City Manager, Columbia, SC.
In addition to Chairperson O’Dell, Commissioners Stanley Glanz, Sheriff Of Tulsa County, Tulsa, OK; Phil E. Keith, Chief Of Police, Knoxville, TN; and Patricia S. Ticer, Senator, 30th District, Alexandria, VA were reappointed to another full term.
The remaining nine CALEA Commissioners are: Ron Ace, Chief of Police, Concord, CA; Dr. John D. Glover, retired Vice President Of Corporate Security, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Davie, FL; Professor Jack R. Greene, Dean of the College of Criminal Justice, Northeastern University, Boston, MA; Ted G. Kamatchus, Sheriff of Marshall County, Marshalltown IA; John D. Laflamme, Executive Director, Alberta Gaming/Liquor Commission, Alberta, Canada; Elaine M. O’Neal, Chief District Court Judge, 14th Judicial District, Durham County, NC; Sam I. Sasaki, Jr., City Manager, Newport, OR; Patrick Sullivan; Director of Safety & Security, Cherry Creek School District, Greenwood Village, CO; and Mary Ann Viverette, Chief of Police, Gaithersburg, MD.
