NEWS RELEASE THE 2003-2004 SRIC FOCUS GROUP CONVENES December 2003 The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®) is pleased to announce the creation of the 2003-2004 Standards Review and Interpretation Committee Focus Group. The Focus Group was authorized at the July 2003 Conference and had its first meeting in conjunction with the Fall Conference last month.
As outlined in the Focus Group’s Mission Statement, its purpose is two-fold: to undertake a review of all existing law enforcement standards in terms of clarity and current relevance; and, to review the accreditation process and improve upon it wherever necessary. Any resultant changes will also be reviewed as to applicability to CALEA standards for public safety communications and public safety training academy agencies. To this end, the Focus Group is made up of 26 public safety professionals, eight CALEA Commissioners and ten CALEA staff. The Focus Group is Co-Chaired by Commissioner Bill Miller, Chief of Police, Elgin, Illinois and Commissioner Mary Ann Viverette, Chief of Police, Gaithersburg, Maryland.
At its initial organizational meeting, the Focus Group was divided into 4 Sub-Committees, each with a designated Chairperson and assigned to review a specific group of standards in the Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, 4th Edition:
Sub-Committee 1 -Administration (Chapters 1-17) – Chairperson: Chief Mike French, Goffstown (NH) Police Department, (mfrench@ci.goffstown.nh.us); Deputy Chief Tom Hoffman, Co-Chairperson, West Sacramento (CA) Police Department; Commissioner Louis Dekmar, Chief of Police, LaGrange (GA) Police Department; Ms. Dorris Certain, Plano (TX) Police Department; Director Chris Fischer, Valley Communications Center (WA); Ms. Marilyn Stieneke, Cary (NC) Police Department; Mr. Virgil Young, FBI (Ret.); and Program Managers Ted LeMay and Christie Goddard.

All interested agencies are invited to send suggested changes, deletions and/or additions to the Chairperson of the appropriate Sub-Committee (bold) with a copy to CALEA Program Manager Karen Shepard (kshepard@calea.org).
The Focus Group represents the latest in a series of periodic reviews of the Commission’s standards and programs and is consistent with the Commission’s philosophy of accreditation to insure contemporary professional standards and a continuing commitment to improving, whenever possible, the accreditation process in an ever-changing world.
