NEWS RELEASE

NEW COMMISSIONER APPOINTMENTS

October 18, 2007

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEAâ) is pleased to announce the appointment of three new Commissioners: Lieutenant Colonel Gayle Cameron, New Jersey State Police; Chief Thomas Warren, Omaha, Nebraska Police Department; and Chief Lisa Womack, Elgin, Illinois Police Department.  The appointments are effective January 1, 2008.

CALEA was established as an independent accrediting authority in 1979 by the four major law enforcement executive associations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); National Sheriffs' Association (NSA); and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).  The Commission has 21 members; 11 members are law enforcement practitioners; the remaining 10 members are from the public and private sectors.  The position is voluntary with Commissioners appointed to a term of three years.

CALEA’s purpose and mission is two-fold.  First, to establish a body of standards designed to (a) increase public safety agency capabilities to prevent and control crime; (b) increase agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of public safety services; (c) increase cooperation and coordination with other public safety agencies; and (d) increase citizen and employee confidence in the goals, objectives, policies, and practices of the public safety agency. Second, to establish and administer accreditation and recognition programs through which public safety agencies can demonstrate voluntarily that they meet a set of professionally recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.

Chief Warren joined the Omaha Police Department in 1984.  He served in a variety of departments, including internal affairs, information services and the investigations bureau. He earned a master's degree in criminal justice in 1989. He was chosen Omaha Police Department Employee of the Year in 1999.  He was promoted to precinct commander in 2002 and was appointed Chief of Police in December 2003, becoming the first African-American to hold that post.

Chief Womack began her law enforcement career in 1992 with the Arlington, Texas Police Department. She rose through the ranks from Sergeant to Deputy Chief of Police.  In 2004 she was appointed Chief of Police for the Sugar Land, Texas Police Department and served there until becoming Chief of Police for Elgin, Illinois in 2005.

Lieutenant Colonel Cameron currently serves as Deputy Superintendent of Investigations for the New Jersey State Police.  She began her career in 1980 as a road duty trooper in Southern New Jersey. Prior to her class graduating, only two women had served as troopers for the New Jersey State Police. Her ascent through the ranks began in 1984 when she was promoted to the rank of Detective, Captain in 2001, Major in 2004, Commanding Officer of the Division Human Resources Section in 2005 and, then, Commanding Officer of the Administration Section.

These new Commissioners bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be beneficial to CALEA in meeting its mission.  They have all distinguished themselves as respected leaders in the law enforcement profession.

We congratulate and welcome Lieutenant Colonel Cameron, Chief Warren and Chief Womack.
