The Standards

The Standards for Public Safety Training Academies 182 standards organized into nine chapters or topic areas:

1. Certification;
2. Organization;
3. Direction and Authority;
4. Human Resources;
5. Recruitment and Selection; 
6. Instructional Systems;
7. Program Development;
8. Training Support; and
9. Student Welfare.

CALEA views the standards as reflecting the best professional requirements and practices for a public safety training academy agency.

Seeking to establish the best professional practices, the standards prescribe "what" agencies should be doing, but not "how" they should be doing it. That decision is left up to the individual agency and its Chief Executive Officer.
