Contract Specialist Wendi Jones and CALEA Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry

July 2007 marks the 10th year of service for Wendi Jones. Wendi joined CALEA in 1997 as an administrative assistant. Currently, she handles the agency agreement, CALEA Conference registrations, and CALEA Merchandise orders. She enjoys reading a good book and spending time with her family. The Commission thanks and congratulates Wendi for her contributions to CALEA.

CALEA Agency News

  • The Commission sends its condolences to the family of Captain Patrick Reeves of the Manchester (CT) Police Department. Captain Reeves passed away at the CALEA Conference in Montreal. He was found in his hotel room on Sunday morning, July 29, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Maureen and two adult sons. 

  • Eleven agencies were recognized during the July 2007 CALEA Conference Celebration Banquet, for having been CALEA Accredited for 15 or more continuous years. Click HERE to view the list of meritorious agencies. 

  • CALEA has posted the names of the Flagship Agencies honored at the July 2007 CALEA Conference. Click HERE to view the list of agencies.

  • The new Chief of Police for Arvada (CO) Police Department is Don Wick. Arvada Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since March 1986.

  • Fulton County (GA) Police Department's new Chief of Police is Cassandra A. Jones. Fulton County Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since April 1987.

  • On August 1, 2007, Michael I. Williams was appointed Chief of Police for Burlington (NC) Police Department. Burlington Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since April 1989. 
  • On August 31, 2007, Steven Chalmers is retiring as Chief of Police for Durham (NC) Police Department. The new Chief will be Jose L. Lopez, Sr. Durham Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since July 1991.

  • Harry Patrick Dolan is Raleigh (NC) Police Department’s new Chief of Police. Raleigh Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since March 1992.

  • Appleton (WI) Police Department recently appointed David Walsh as the new Chief of Police. Appleton Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since August 1992. 

  • Assistant Chief Steve Heim was promoted to Director of Public Safety for the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority Department of Public Safety. The Airport Authority has been CALEA Accredited since November 1996. 

  • Arturo Acevedo is the new Chief of Police for the Austin (TX) Police Department. Austin Police Department has been CALEA Accredited since December 2000. 

  • In July, Colonel Stanley Griffin was appointed Superintendent of Louisiana State Police. Louisiana State Police has been CALEA Accredited since November 2003. 

  • Columbus (MS) Police Department’s new Chief of Police is Joseph B. St. John. Columbus Police Department is currently in initial self-assessment for CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation.

  • The new contact for the Latin American Police Accreditation Coalition (LAPAC) is Lic. J. Leonardo Hernández Ramos, Quality Assurance Director, Dirección de Seguridad Pública, Protección Civil y Bomberos Zapopan, Jalisco.

  • The newly formed PAC Presidents Committee met for the first time at the CALEA Conference in Montreal. This group was organized by Officer Jeff Carroll of the Lakewood (WA) Police Department and is opened to all PAC Presidents/Chairs and/or their representatives. The committee plans to meet at each CALEA Conference.

CALEA Standards

  • Agencies in the CALEA Law Enforcement and Training Academy Accreditation Programs can download the Interim Change Notices for their Standards Manuals. The downloads are located in the CALEA Standards and Process Section of CALEA Online website.
  • There are two Proposed CALEA Standards posted in the CALEA Forum II. CALEA Clients please review the standards and post your comments no later than September 28th.

CALEA Meeting Minutes

  • Standards Review and Interpretation Committee meeting minutes from the July 2007 CALEA Conference in Montreal, Quebec are posted in the Clients Only CALEA Minutes and Reports Section.

CALEA Assessors

  • Attention CALEA Team Leaders: the new On-site Assessment Report format will be used on all CALEA On-site Assessments starting January 1, 2008. All Team Leaders must receive training on the new On-site Assessment Report to be eligible to conduct assessments after January 1, 2008. The required On-site Assessment Report training does not qualify for the three year team leader refresher training. The On-site Assessment Report training takes about three hours and will be provided at the following locations:  

  • State of Ohio Accreditation Resources (SOAR) meeting at the Mason Municipal Center, 6000 Mason-Montgomery Road, Mason, OH, Friday, August 17 at 9:30AM.  (Based on need, there may be an afternoon session.)

  • At the CALEA Office in Fairfax, VA, Monday, September 10 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

  • At the CALEA Office in Fairfax, VA, Monday, October 1, from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

  • At the Georgia Accreditation Coalition (GPAC) Meeting in Macon, GA, Thursday, October 11, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Contact Rhonda Garner (rgarner@calea.org or (800) 368-3757, extension 42) to have your name placed on a training roster, but pre-registration is not a requirement. There is no charge for the training; however, transportation and other costs are the responsibility of each individual. CALEA Assessors (non-Team Leaders) are encouraged to attend on an available space basis. 

On-site Assessment Training will also be included in the Team Leader Training courses held at the CALEA Conference in Colorado Springs, CO (Wednesday, November 14, 2007). 

  • Assessors with Spanish Language Skills Needed -- CALEA is seeking to train additional assessors who are fluent in speaking and reading both English and Spanish. Potential assessors should be from agencies enrolled in the CALEA Process, and have at least five years of recent law enforcement supervisory experience. Applicants need the written endorsement of their CEO to be considered. To apply, send your resume and the CEO endorsement letter to CALEA Associate Director Jim Brown.  

Persons chosen for new assessor training must register for and attend a specific CALEA Conference at their own or agency expense, take two days of assessor training, and pass a written test. Those who pass the assessor test have a solid knowledge of CALEA’s Accreditation Standards and Process.

The new features include-

ü       Ability to designate multiple "Assigned To" entities to individual standards.

ü       Allow user to compare specific years on the Agency Demographic Report.

ü       New Program Backup Option, with reminder settings.

ü       Additional Settings for Startup Reports.

ü       New "Proof Status" display for Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3.

ü       Ability to store messages that will show in the body of the email on the Task Reminder report.

ü       Option to show the CALEA Standard Number and Title in the body of the email sent for the Task Reminder report.

ü       New Program Utilities.

ü       Indicator for standards that have proof of compliance of "May Be Observed."

ü       Multiple new reports such as those showing completed "proofs," "not completed proofs," percentage of standards completed, list of Observation Standards, and Last Report Completion Date.

CACE Users will be notified when they can download the Version 2.0 software, an updated program help file, and the new Users Guide from the CALEA website.
