CALEA-
RAND PROJECT--In
the fall of 2006, representatives from the RAND Corporation
approached CALEA with a project on performance measurements.
The
RAND Corporation is a nonprofit institution that helps improve
policy and decision-making through research and analysis.
As part of the proposal, RAND would (1) review the work CALEA
had completed on developing measures to compare performance of
police agencies and (2) plan a future course of action.
The project is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department
of Justice. Three CALEA Accredited agencies volunteered to take
part and in February 2008, the project got underway with a
meeting with CALEA, RAND and agency personnel. The
February
meeting was attended by CALEA Commission Chairperson
James
O’Dell, CALEA Commissioner
Gary Cordner,
CALEA Executive Director
Sylvester
Daughtry, and CALEA Planning/Research Coordinator
Reginald
Newell as well as representatives from the
Broward
County (FL) Sheriff’s Office, the
Kettering
(OH) Police Department, and the
Knoxville
(TN) Police Department, the participating agencies.
As a result of this two-day meeting, the group agreed upon a set
of potential measures. The RAND representative have planned to
conduct April site visits to the three agencies to examine the
feasibility of implementing these measures. Updates on their
progress to follow in future issues of CALEA News.

REMINDER
— AWARDS BANQUET SEATING CHANGE
The following new policy and procedure should help ease confusion at
the CALEA Conference Celebration Banquet and ensure all attendees
with RESERVE SEATS are accommodated:
Agencies
presented before the Commission for credentialing (Candidate
Agencies) are required to complete an “Awards Banquet
Verification Form”, which will now be emailed to the
Accreditation/Recognition Manager. The verification form is used
to reserve table space at the Celebration Banquet, held on
Saturday night. Agencies must complete this form and return it
to CALEA by the required deadline with an accurate count of the
number of seats they want to reserve. Only the number of
seats requested by the agency will be RESERVED. An agency
that fails to return the Awards Banquet Verification Form will
have to use the general seating area of the banquet hall; NO
RESERVED SEATS will be available to them. Please contact
your Program Manager with any questions you have regarding this
policy.
